Cosmetic rhinoplasty

If your nose has been deformed from birth (for example, if it is too big, too flat, too wide, etc.), and has perhaps caused you years of psychological distress, rhinoplasty may be the answer to your problem. However, careful consideration and preparation should always be given to rhinoplasty procedures that are carried for aesthetic reasons. We therefore use the latest computer software to work with you to create a virtual model of your new nose, presenting a before-and-after simulation to ensure that the refashioned nose will fit your face harmoniously and naturally. The following rhinoplasty procedures are possible: Nose straightening, reducing nasal height and width, removing nasal humps, levelling a saddle nose (perhaps with the body's own tissue), adjusting the angle, width and height of the tip of the nose.

PROCEDURE/FOLLOW-UP TREATMENT

First, the surgeon will carry out extensive preliminary investigations and will conduct a detailed discussion with the patient. The surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic and its nature depends very much on the condition of the nose and the correction the patient want to have made. External procedures (open rhinoplasty) and internal procedures (endonasal rhinoplasty) are both possible options. In a hooked nose, the protruding bone part is removed with the appropriate tools. In a crooked nose, the septum has to be straightened. If only the tip of the nose is to be corrected, sections are placed in the nasal vestibules to allow the cartilage to be re-aligned and moulded. A rhinoplasty takes at least one and a half hours.

It is extremely important to stabilise the position of the nose after the procedure. For 7 to 14 days, the patient has to wear a splint that is fixed by a bandage. Packs can be removed after a couple of days. Patients must desist from playing sport and taking saunas for at least 10 weeks. They must also not wear glasses for at least 6 weeks. If possible, patients should take it easy for at least 7 days after the procedure and not go to work either. Patients should also be prepared to spend a night at the clinic.

RISKS/SIDE EFFECTS

For at least a fortnight, patients can expect to see swelling and discoloration in the nose and cheeks. They will experience no more than moderate pain which can be controlled using medication. Patients may also experience slight sensory disturbances of the external nose, and this may go on for several weeks. Increased, temporary drying and crusting of the nasal mucosa can be treated using oils and ointments. In very rare cases, subsequent minor corrections to the nose may be required. There are also the usual risks associated with a general anaesthetic (cardiovascular problems, intolerance to medication, breathing problems, nausea, vomiting and post-surgical hoarseness). It may take one year for the nose to heal completely.
